Word 2007 Out of Control

Keep getting application faults? Do you have HP printer drivers, particularly host-based ones? Yikes, your options are few. (Aside from disconnecting and uninstalling the HP pritner drivers>)

How about mso.dll failing and it seems to be due to an addin?
See Word Add-Ins Gone Wild

...and from that a deleting registry entry cleared up the problem.

XP Boot Floppy

Straight from the horse's mouth:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=305595

FAT32 limitations

The outermost limits of size is 8 Terabytes, though 2 Terabytes is the common size mentioned for less extreme settings. MS has info on the limits.

BUT there otherwise are some practical limits.

File Size
First, is that the largest file you can create on such a drive is 4GB. Therefore this can be problematic for backups and images. Use an NTFS drive for large files, or use some process which splits the files before the 4GB size is hit.

Formatting
The size of the FATS tables get tremendously big and perhaps 40% of your drive would be "wasted."

In Windows2000 or higher, Microsoft formatting tools will not create partitions higher than 32Gb.

Older motherboards ran into limitations due to Bios contraints and often had a limit of 127GB (sometimes seen as 137G). More info and help about LBA.

Fat32 Advantages, Etc.
The big advantage of FAT32 is, for an external drive, that the drive can be shared or read by both PC and MAC systems. Also to note, file copying to a FAT32 drive from NTFS removes security settings from the file.

Moving Outlook to a new PC

So you have the PST from an old pc or profile and want to put it into place for the new profile. Here in a nutshell are the steps.

Instructions for Outlook 2003
* Run Outlook and set the POP account (typical). Don't let any mail come in if you can - exit immediately - or pull the cord.
*Close Outlook
*Rename the small just-created outlook.pst and put in place the old .pst file.
*Go to Control Panel, Mail. Look At Profile.
*Add the file as a data file.
*Go into the Email Account properties and select the second entry of Personal folders) for where to deposit mail.
*Go back to the profile Data File info, and remove the first .pst shown.
*In the Email area, View/Change the Address Book, remove what is there, and then add Outlook Address Book.
*Finally run Outlook. Test by using Tools, Address Book to see that Contacts are visible. (If not: view the Folder Tree, right click the Contacts, and on the Address Book Tab, select the checkmark for use as Outlook Address Book. If still doesn't work, redo the steps in the Profile about removing the address book and reinserting, etc).

Instructions for 2007
As above, but just put the pst in place after setting up the profile. The mail delivery location and address book are taken care of automatically.

Final note - on the memorized addresses. They live in the .NK2 file. You have to use the blank Outlook one, createa an email, then close Outlook, rename the baby .NK2 file and slip into place the previously used one.
