Free Password Revealer

To discover what passwords are, say for POP or SMTP settings in Outlook, this free program for password revealing works fine.

Another free one to consider using is Kernel Password Unmask from Nucleus. Now for a non-Microsoft program we found that Nucleus' version did not reveal the password, while Passware's (above) did. But, both tools may be handy at various junctures.

Fix Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup can be useful, but it has a bad feature, and one that hangs often during it's calculation - and that is "compress old files."

It's a bad idea to begin with - do not try to save disk space that way.

So to eliminate it, use regedit, seach for compress old files, and delete the key which has it. THEN when you run Disk Cleanup, it can be used to empty temporary files and whatnot.

Once you see something you want to investigate, choose right click to get to Explorer or a command prompt (either program).

And with Tree Size, you can in Explorer, right click a folder and use Treesize to navigate a folder of interest.

XP Repair Choices

1) If you need to just replace a file, boot the OS cd and choose R for recovery console. (or you can have that choice already if you had done a d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

2) Or you might want to Repair the existing Windows installation and re-use the existing folder. So At the initial question hit Enter, then an R to Repair.

3) Or you might want to delete the partition on the hard drive (if bad viruses and rootkits abound, you may want to wipe the disk first)... For the initial question, hit ENTER, then choose Install, then look to the bottom menu area and take DELETE Partition (taking the next few confirmations). Then let it create a new partition for the OS, but generally, chose the QUICK format

Windows 2000 Repair

Had to boot an os cd on Windows 2000 SBS, then R for recovery console and run chkdsk /r 2-3 times until no errors. In the beginning, I had done a DIR command and had gotten a bad message about no volume, BUT the repair worked. This was on a 2 mirrored drive setup.

A user's Office 2007 was crashing quite a bit, several times per day. Office 2007 has a diagnostic which can analyze the setup and the errors.
